# Competitor research + enrichment plan — deptmatic / automated marketing

Compiled 2026-07-07. Eight in-depth teardowns of the tools we compete with, plus a ranked plan to enrich our sites (deptmatic.com + siblings + the audit report) with what they do well and where they're weak.

## What they all agree on (the convergent findings)
1. **They abandoned the small business.** Real automation starts at **$69–$1,000+/mo**, per-seat, metered credits (Jasper $69/seat, Copy.ai "$29→$1,000 with nothing between," Writesonic $399, HubSpot $800+$3,000 onboarding, Hootsuite $99–399/seat, Surfer up to $999). Reviewers literally say "overkill for small business." **deptmatic owns the vacated bottom.**
2. **Human-approval is the trust wedge.** The leaders (HubSpot, Jasper, Hootsuite, Surfer, AirOps, Relevance) all sell "drafts you approve / guardrails / review checkpoints" — validating our model. The autopilot players (Writesonic, BrandWell) are silent on control = **our differentiator to press.**
3. **A free tool is the universal front door** (HubSpot Website Grader, Surfer's 14 tools, Copy.ai's 65, Hootsuite calculators, BrandWell detector). **Our free audit is both the lead magnet AND the product's first step.**
4. **They win search the same way:** one landing page per capability/agent, **FAQ schema + JSON-LD on everything**, comparison/definition pages, a coined category term, quantified/named proof. GEO/AEO/AISO is the new battleground (HubSpot even charges $50 for it — we bundle it).
5. **Named agents / methodology loops make abstract AI tangible** (Relevance's "Bosh," AirOps' "Quill," Writesonic's "Track/Prioritize/Act/Measure," Surfer's Content Score gauge).

## THE ENRICHMENT PLAN (ranked by impact)

### Tier 1 — build first (highest impact)
1. **Free public "Marketing Department Audit" tool.** No signup: URL → instant scorecard (SEO/content/social/email gaps). It is simultaneously the lead magnet, the live product demo, and the answer to 2026's "agent-washing" skepticism (proves competence on the visitor's *own* site before any ask). We already have the engine (autoengine) — productize a public version. *Every competitor uses a free tool; ours IS the product.*
2. **Redesign the audit report** (steal Surfer's best UX): lead with a **"Marketing Health Score" 0–100 gauge** + sub-scores; a **"Do these 3 first" quick-wins panel** before the full findings; and a **plain-language business consequence beside each finding** ("customers can't find your hours → est. X lost calls/mo"). Ours spans the whole department, which Surfer structurally can't.
3. **Make "Nothing ships without your approval" a hero-level promise** + a visible **Approve / Edit / Ship queue mockup** on the homepage. The universal trust wedge, and our real edge over the autopilot players.
4. **Homepage = the department org chart.** A named cast of role-agents — The Auditor, The SEO Manager, The Content Desk, The Social Scheduler, The Email Writer, The Approval Queue — each with a one-line job. This is the structural advantage no single-agent competitor can match: we're a whole *department*, so show the roster.

### Tier 2 — the SEO / positioning engine
5. **A named loop as the homepage skeleton:** **Audit → Draft → Approve → Ship → Measure.** (Writesonic/Surfer/AirOps all do this; it teaches the method while selling and doubles as onboarding.)
6. **One landing page per role** (`/department/audit`, `/seo`, `/content`, `/social`, `/email`) — each with hero, "what this role does for you," 3 benefits, a use case, **FAQ schema**, dual CTA. (Copies Jasper's `/agents/*` architecture — the biggest structural gap between a pitch site and a Jasper.)
7. **Comparison + definition content hub** — "AI marketing department vs agency vs freelancer," "What is an automated marketing department," "How much should a small business spend on marketing (2026)," and an honest "deptmatic vs [Jasper / HubSpot / Copy.ai / Writesonic]" page each. TL;DR box + comparison table + FAQPage schema on every one. Captures competitor brand-search overflow.
8. **Coin & own the SMB enemy** — "the marketing-tool pile" / "marketing overwhelm" (Copy.ai owns "GTM bloat"; we own the small-business version). A flagship page + the phrase repeated across siblings.

### Tier 3 — proof & answer-engine
9. **Quantified, named-outcome proof everywhere** — replace vague "AI-powered marketing" copy with specific numbers + before/after audit screenshots. Use the sibling network (a/b/c/1.deptmatic, the magnetics sites) as live case studies. Outcome format: "went from [zero state] to [specific outcome] in [timeframe]."
10. **AISO native + free** — bundle "get cited by ChatGPT / Gemini / Perplexity" (counter HubSpot's $50 add-on); ship FAQ + JSON-LD on every deptmatic page (dogfood — "we do to your site what we did to ours"); publish 1–2 original SMB data studies ("we audited 500 small-business sites — here's what's broken") as citation bait.
11. **Pricing transparency** — one clear low published price, stated plainly: "No sales call. No quote. No per-seat. No credits. One flat monthly price." (Directly counters BrandWell's + Relevance's quote-walls.)
12. **Authenticity high ground** — never touch "undetectable / bypass AI detection" (BrandWell's public liability). Our line: "Content built to earn trust and rankings, reviewed by you, in your real voice."

### Guardrails
- Keep the **subscription-only** model; the free audit runs on our existing engine — no new API billing.
- **Dogfood everything:** the pitch sites themselves should demonstrate the SEO/AEO/schema work we sell (the site is the demo).
